Do Hair Extensions Damage Hair?

You’ve asked Google, searched Pinterest, and asked your friends on Facebook; but no one can really give you a straight-up answer…

Do hair extensions damage hair?

The easy answer? No. The real truth? There are a few things that go into the health of your natural hair when wearing extensions: the method you have installed, how you take care of them at home, and how your stylist takes care of them in her salon.

There are so many hair extension types to choose from, from clip-ins, tape-ins, braided-in, and weft-sew-ins; no wonder you might be confused about which route to go! Then on top of it all, there are different methods to choose from within all of those different types of extensions. At Salt + Light Hair Co., I use the Invisible Bead Extension method. This is the only patented method on the market and the number one most requested extension method. With IBE (Invisible Bead Extensions), there’s a fully flexible beaded foundation. If you’re a fine-haired extension seeker or a thick-haired girl, this foundation is customized to you! When having your hair extensions customized to you, I find out using your hair density how many wefts of hair we can sew into your installation. On install day, your hair wefts are sewn into a fully flexible beaded row customized to your hair’s natural density and your dream mane. Extension wearers need complete flexibility in order to wear those coveted hairstyles and most importantly, to eliminate unnecessary tension. Having a flexible foundation is quite literally the foundation to having a damage-free experience with hair extensions!

The next key part of enjoying a damage-free experience with hair extensions is all a part of taking care of them at home. During your consultation with your stylist, you should receive a how-to on how to take care of your hair extensions at home. If you didn’t read below! -

  • Always use professional products your stylist recommends

  • Use a daily serum

  • Follow proper beach/swimming hair prep

  • Blow-dry after activities that cause sweating

  • Be diligent about a nighttime prep routine

  • When you brush your hair extensions, place your free hand on the corner of your hair extensions and hold as you brush with your other hand to avoid tangling and/or ripping out the corner of your hair extensions.

In another blog post, I’ll explain each of these home haircare tips!

Lastly, to avoid damage to your hair while wearing extensions, I recommend getting your Invisible Bead Extensions moved up every 8-10 weeks! Timing your extension move-ups will depend greatly on your own natural hair’s density and health. What extension move-up maintenance time you have to begin with, may not be the maintenance time you grow into through your journey with hair extensions.

Having a damage-free experience with hair extensions is super easy thanks to Invisible Bead Extensions!
